Special Exhibition

Karya 1943. Forced Labour and the Holocaust

5 September 2024 - 30 March 2025

The Album

The starting point of the exhibition is the photo collection of a German engineer who was deployed in Greece during the Second World War and carried out construction projects for the Wehrmacht. The album contains photographs of Jewish forced labourers. Andreas Assael, son of a Jewish survivor from Thessaloniki, discovered these unique photos at a flea market in Munich and researched their history.

The exhibition

The multimedia and participatory exhibition shows these historical photos for the first time in the context of the German occupation and the Holocaust. In 1943, Jewish forced labourers had to remove a rock mountain and built a side railway line at the Karya railway station. Most of them were murdered in Auschwitz after completion of the work in August 1943. The exhibition is the result of a Greek-German educational project and a cooperation between the Documentation Centre for Nazi Forced Labour, the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the University of Onsabrück, the Jewish Museum of Greece in Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. It will be presented in Greece and Germany. A website offers information and innovative learning materials.
