Glass

An installation by Sonya Schönberger

30 April - 12 October 2025

Around 100,000 objects were unearthed during archaeological excavations on Tempelhofer Feld from 2012 onwards. The excavations were mainly carried out in the area of former barrack camps where Nazi forced labourers from the occupied countries were housed. They were forced to work for Deutsche Lufthansa and Weser Flugzeugbau GmbH in armaments production. The finds also included hundreds of pieces of broken glass, some of which had been deformed by fires caused by air raids.

In Sonya Schönberger's artistic exploration "Glass", these fragments merge into sculptural objects. They symbolise the fragility of memory and the limits of our understanding. At the same time, the work encourages us to understand remembrance as a conscious act that carries history into the present.
