Neighbourhood Walk in Italian

After September 8, 1943, and the breakdown of the alliance with Nazi Germany, Italian soldiers were regarded as traitors, and around 630,000 of them were deported to Nazi Germany, where they were forced to perform labor under the harshest conditions until the end of the war, in the arms industry, agriculture, mining, and other sectors. 435 of the so-called Italian Military Internees (IMI) were housed in the Schöneweide camp, which today is the site of the Nazi Forced Labor Documentation Center.
We will begin by exploring the history and individual stories of the IMIs in the exhibition “Caught Between All Sides.” We will then follow in the footsteps of Italian and other forced laborers from various countries who were forced to work, among other places, in the nearby industrial area—primarily for the company AEG. During the approximately 1.5 km walk, we will also look at the industrial history of the Schöneweide district. The tour will be conducted in Italian.
